LK Live Edge Design
My transition from a copy machine repairman to a full-time woodworker is a great story. As I often get inquiries about how this company came to be, I decided to share it here.
It all began while I was on vacation in North Carolina. My lovely wife and I were shopping (her idea, not mine), and like all men who go shopping, I got sidetracked. Instead of finding the nearest cushioned seat, I was drawn to a room filled with slabs of wood. It took me back to my childhood. When I would spend summers with my Grandpa Lowe, who found his passion in carpentry. My fondest memories are of when I could assist on his projects (I say assist, but he may have said distract). Back then, I had even wondered if I may one day follow in his footsteps. But as life does, it gave me a different path to follow. Or so I thought.
Live Edge Wood to Hand-Crafted Furniture
These slabs were a bit raw, but still beautiful. And I guess I fell in love. And naturally, so did my wife, who now wanted a dining room table out of this beautiful piece of Maple. I figured I could make that work.
Only problem? It was big. So big that I wasn’t sure if we’d get it into the house, or what kind of legs it would have. But we bought it anyway and brought it home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was our new baby, requiring a similar amount of work and expenses, just without the diapers.
I had no idea it’d take so much effort, but I sanded, sanded and sanded some more. The raw nature of the wood was revealed: unusual lines, swirls and designs. Turns out, the wood was spalted Maple, a highly sought after piece of wood. As for the swirls? It’s actually fungal decay driven by bugs and worms that halts when the wood is thoroughly dried. Sounds gross but it is naturally stunning – these little creatures are nature’s artists, in essence.
For weeks, I worked away at the process. When to dry the wood. When to sand it. And when to cut it. Lessons were learned but I perfected my craft. Today, my wife and I enjoy our live edge dining room table as we sit down for a meal every evening.
Today, what started as a gift for my wife turned into a full-blown hobby – and now a business. I started making cutting boards, charcuterie boards, tables, coasters and more using various woods like teak, walnut, pecan and cherry. Whatever quality wood I can get my hands on, you can bet they’ll be made into something beautiful.
Introducing Epoxy Resin
But the wood itself wasn’t enough. I needed something more. So I began working with epoxy resin – a chemical substance I use to fill out some of the live edge corners of the wood.
It adds a whole other element to the designs – each piece ends up with a unique river-like detail, hand-crafted and high quality. I can even change the color of the resin.
